Initial Storyboard

In our group we created our first storyboard for our soap opera trailer. The storyboard includes images of what will happen in each scene, scene duration times, camera shots and whether there will be any sound.

I contributed to this by writing in each of the storyboard boxes what would appear in each one. I also contributed to drawing the images in the boxes.

Our storyboard can be seen here:

Characters and Cateogrization

As a group we decided to create a table to show each of our characters and compare them to a character in an existing soap. This will help us to identify who our characters really are and help us to create characters who stick to soap opera conventions. By comparing them to existing characters we can show that the characters traits are previously popular.

I inputted to this piece of work by helping decide which character we could compare our characters too. James Garrod was responsible for creating the table.

This table can be seen here on our group blog:

Storyline Flowchart

We decided we should make a flowchart to show the different story lines included in our soap opera and how each one links to one and another. This is a good way of showing the relations of the stories and how the characters are connected.

Matt Bigg was responsible for creating the storyline, however I helped by talking with him about how the stories could be connected.

Naming our Soap

As a group we had to decide on an appropriate name for our new soap opera. This is a very important task as it is what the audience will hear about our soap first. We came up with several ideas including:
- Waltham Crossing
- Walthumbury
- Waltham Corner
- The Walthams

My input were the names Waltham Crossing and Walthumbury. After discussion we decided the best name would be the Walthams. This is because it is short and snappy which means it will grab attention quickly and easily.

Character Profiles

To help us reach our target audiences it was important our characters showed characteristics that would appeal to this audience. To make sure we stuck to our brief and target audience profile I created a profile for each character. These profiles included the name of the character, their age, their occupation and a description that briefly sums them up.

It is important we know about our characters so we can make them interact with the story lines appropriately.

The character profiles can be seen on our group blog here:

Storylines Explained

As part of our group work I decided we should make a video which would describe our chosen storylines in detail. I thought the best way to show this would be by creating the scenes we would include. I was responsible for writing the script for the video which included what would appear in the mini scenes and what we would say to explain the storylines. I then edited the video to show which characters would appear in each story.

We made a video as it was a good way of conveying our ideas as apposed to writing about them, it was easier to describe the scenes by actually showing them.

This video can be seen on our group blog here:

Target Audience Profile

As a group we created a target audience profile. This would clearly state our intentions as to which type of audience we would like to attract.

For this piece of work I was contributed by delegating tasks to the other team members. I was responsible for looking at audience theories and how we would apply these to our soap opera. I included examples for Halls Reception Theory, The Hypodermic Needle Theory and The Uses and Gratifications Theory.

It is important for us to create a target audience profile so we can identify who we are going to target and how we will reach them. This included demographic groups, age, gender and occupations. It is important we appeal to our chosen target audience.

Our target audience profile can be seen on our group blog here:

Soap Opera Brief

We created our brief so that we could create a clear picture of what we want to convey in our new soap. To do this we wrote a description about the characters we would be including and the locations we will being staring the characters in.

It is important to establish these things so that we have something to work from and make sure we do not go off track with our characters and story lines.

I contributed to this piece of work by writing the description of the characters and the locations. Our brief is on our group blog here:

Final Ideas

As a group we got together to decide what story lines and characters we would definitely use. James Garrod wrote up a table which displayed the story lines, characters, locations and audiences.

We decided on using the following story lines:
- an interrupted wedding
- a house party
- a pub based storyline
- a man in love with the bride

We decided to include the following characters in our soap opera:
- Helen, the bride to be
- Dan, the groom to be
- George, the character secretly in love with Helen
- Jenny, the conventional teenage girl trying to impress her friends
- Hendrick, the typical 'Jack the Lad'
- Keith, the village drunk

The locations we will use are as follows:
- The local village
- The local pub
- The church
- The house were the party happens

Justifications of Ideas

I created a piece of work to show the justification of the ideas and stories we have looked at and chose. I done this to make it clear why we thought these stories and ideas would work and be popular.

To justify the ideas I used examples of similar story lines in other existing soaps that have been popular. By using story lines that have already been popular it is more likely to make our soap opera become more popular.

This piece of work can be seen here on the group blog:

Initial Ideas for Our Soap Opera

As a group we had a discussion about our initial ideas. This was so we could collate all of our thoughts and ideas of what should go into our soap opera. We firstly thought about story lines and characters that could be included in our first two episodes. We focused on the first two episodes because when it came to making our trailer we could pick out the parts we thought would work best in a trailer.

To contribute to this discussion I suggested that we use a wedding based storyline as I thought it would work well due it being popular in other existing soaps such as Bradley and Staceys wedding in Eastenders. According to BARB.com the viewing figures for this specific episode were 11,446,000.

Other ideas we came up with as a group were:
- Theft
- House party
- Local pub
- Young couple
- Drugs and alcohol

We will continue to develop these ideas to decide what is going to into our soap opera.

Soap Opera Questionaire Results

Here are the results and analysis of my results:

36759820 Soap Opera Trailer Questionnaire Results[1]

From the results of my target audience questionnaire I can conclude that the main audience groups for soap operas are economic groups C - E, and of a large range of ages. This means we will have to consider what will best attract these groups when it comes to creating our soap opera trailer. This will mean using a diverse range of actors, ranging in age and class in order to have a cast that can be related to by all audiences. We will try to apply the uses and gratifications theory of personal relation to our soap opera trailer, which will enable our audience to relate to particular characters, helping them empathise with the story lines.

We have used the results of this questionnaire to help us create our target audience profile which can be seen on our group blog here:
